Product Review:

CDCTTL is pleased with the positive initial results of a parrot pest deterrent trial currently taking place in Biche. For the 2020-2021 crop season, cocoa farmers in Biche and Charuma have complained of a sudden upsurge of parrot damage, with some estates experiencing as much as 100% crop loss. One of the main pests in cocoa is the Yellow Crowned Amazon Parrot. Parrots are incredibly destructive, feasting upon mature and young cocoa pods. To alleviate this problem, CDCTTL started a pest deterrent trial in June 2021, with the Phoenix Wailer device from Phoenix Agritech. This device was recommended by the Conservator of Forests, Mr. David Mahabir, of the Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries (MALF).

The Phoenix Wailer device emits strobe lights, as well as noises of predatory birds, which discourage the parrots from landing on the cocoa trees. It has been used to solve parrot pest problems in Indonesia and the Caymen Islands. CDCTTL was able to procure and set up the Phoenix Wailer on the estate of a farmer in the Biche area, on June 8th 2021. Mr. Roger Poliah, the Cocoa Development Officer for the area, undertakes heavy monitoring and evaluation of the device. Reports to date, indicate that the device has effectively kept the parrots away from the cocoa trees. CDCTTL will be rotating the device among nearby cocoa estates to continue monitoring its effectiveness over a few months.

This trial resulted from a December 2020 meeting, where CDCTTL brought together farmers of Biche and Charuma, as well as the Conservator of Forests, to determine a way to control the parrots, thereby safeguarding farmer livlihoods and increasing cocoa production. We sincerely thank the farmers who are part of the trial, and the continued collaboration with the Forestry Division, MALF. - Cocoa Development Company TT

"We were delighted with the ease of use and the time-saving fact that you do not have to run wires through the vineyard. Set up takes minutes and not hours and moving the unit is equally fast."
